Lowell 5th grader Wins Contest to Name American Textile History Museum Mascot

“Lulu” hosts surprise party for winning entrant's class at the Rogers School

(Lowell, Mass.) –A Lowell fifth grader has won a district-wide contest to name the American Textile History Museum’s lamb mascot, earning her Rogers School classroom an ice cream party with the mascot as a special guest.

The contest was open to all Lowell public school fifth graders. Of the hundreds of suggested names entered, the selection panel chose “Lulu”, submitted by Kimberly Leng, a student in Donna Rogers’ class at the Rogers School. The reason for her choice? She said Lulu is the name of her family’s new puppy, which is equally cuddly and soft. Runner-up in Mrs. Rogers’ class was Brianna Quiles, with “Baabaalina”.

The ATHM mascot is a popular draw with schoolchildren, often visiting schools as part of the Museum’s education programs. “It was great to see the kids so excited about the contest and the chance to spend the afternoon with Lulu,” said Jim Coleman, ATHM President and CEO. “We can’t wait to get the kids back into the Museum to experience all the fun and interactive new exhibits we’ve got in store for them.”

The Museum is currently closed to the public for renovation, scheduled to reopen in May with a completely renovated core exhibit, “Textile Revolution: An Exploration through Space and Time”.  This highly interactive and modern exhibit will explore not only the history, but also the contemporary and future uses of textiles, including the use of recycled soda bottles and crude oil for clothing and the revolutionary “shark skin” suits worn by U.S. gold medal Olympic swimmers.
