Runway Madness! Exhibition

The fashion photography of Lucian Perkins:
August 16, 2003 through January 4, 2004

Twice each year, the fashion industry presents a romantic spectacle. Fashion Week in New York is a time when top designers present the drama, fantasy and artistic talent that is the fashion industry. The creations that grace the catwalks determine to a large extent, what the rest of us will come to think of as currently fashionable.

But there is another side to the swirl of sequins, the theatrically lit runways, the wispy models. Runway Madness presents the photography of Lucian Perkins, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer from the Washington Post. He has captured the “silent anguish of a designer putting himself and his art on the line,” the panic of a split seam moments before a model takes to the runway, the world of fashion editors and buyers, and the critical eye of the press.

The series of photographs documents the drama of Fashion Week from both sides of the runway. ATHM will exhibit these extraordinary and thought-provoking photographs with examples of haute couture from today and of fashions past from the Museum’s collection of historic costumes. Fashion predictions for the year ahead
produced by New York’s fashion gurus round out the compelling show.
