Up-Cycle Your T-shirt

Learn how to re-craft your old, beloved t-shirts into new shirts and accessories, “up-cycling” them into clothing you’ll love to wear. Using rotary cutters, paints, and easy hand/machine sewing, we’ll transform your old, favorite concert t-shirts or favorite knit shirts into wearable works of art. This is a fun and interactive class for those with beginner through advanced sewing experience.

Materials: Bring: 2-3 clean knit t-shirts that you
want to “up-cycle”. Optional embellishment: Buttons, beads.

Doll Dress

This one-day class uses a dressmaking kit that was inspired by a child’s dress from the American Textile History Museum’s permanent collection. It was originally designed by Anne Louise Chandler and created to fit 16-18 inch dolls with molded bodies. The kit contains fabric, patterns, and sewing notions to make one dress, work apron, petticoat, and drawers. These clothes can be made either by machine or hand. Some knowledge of sewing is helpful.

Victorian Ornaments

Make three different ornaments featuring Victorian embellishment techniques: applique, cordwork, and ribbon work. The decorative elements are all hand-sewn, but you’ll finish each ornament by machine. (Materials provided.) Victorian Trims & Embellishments

EmbellishmentsGet inspired by 19th-century gown embellishments during this one-day workshop with curator, costume historian, and author of Embellishments: Constructing Victorian Detail, Astrida Schaeffer. Learn how the Victorians thought about design and then make a sampler of the piping, cording, applique, pleating, ribbon, and self-trim techniques that made their clothes fabulous. The class includes a visual tour of 19th-century gowns, handouts, and hands-on instruction. Take your own projects to the next level! Basic sewing skill required. Materials provided.
