Annual Fall Gala - November 7, 2008

Carol & George Duncan of Lowell awarded Community Service Award at November 7th Gala

Carol & George Duncan of Lowell awarded Community Service Award at November 7th Gala.

On November 7, Carol and George Duncan were honored with the American Textile History Museum’s 2008 Community Service Award at the Museum’s annual gala at Vesper Country Club.  More than 260 people gathered to honor George Duncan, Founder and Chairman of Enterprise Bank, and his wife Carol, Executive Director of Girls Incorporated as they were presented with the ATHM’s Community Service award. Previous Community Service Award recipient Nancy Donahue made the presentation to the Duncans citing their history of philanthropy, leadership and distinguished service in the Greater Lowell community which has set the standard for community service for more than 40 years.

“Carol and George Duncan were among the first to warmly welcome the American Textile History Museum to the community when we relocated to Lowell in 1997,” said Jim Coleman, ATHM President and CEO. “Through the years, they have shared their gifts of time, wisdom, energy and financial support to strengthen our mission, just as they have so generously supported the Greater Lowell community.”

Among the evening’s many distinguished guests was “Millennia”, the most advanced computerized and programmable mobile interactive robot in the world, who was on hand to greet and entertain the guests. On an evening that celebrated the future of the Museum and the contemporary, interactive exhibits which will be on view at the grand re-opening next May, Millennia’s presence was very appropriate since the robot’s exterior is constructed of a carbon fiber composite; a very modern, very cool textile.

Party goers enjoyed biding on a wide array of interesting Silent Auction items, dining on their choice of lobster stuffed shrimp or roast sliced tenderloin, and dancing to the music of the Winiker Band. The festive event raised more than $115,000 for collections care, educational programs and exhibitions for the Museum.
