Our educators are registered BSA Textile Merit Badge counselors. Scouts should bring their blue cards for sign-off by their instructor at the end of the program. Our program fulfills the following requirements to complete this badge:
- Scouts take part in a tour of the Museum's permanent exhibit "Textiles in America," and observe demonstrations in the Museum's Weave Shed.
- Scouts are expected to complete a question sheet which is provided by the Museum, during their tour.
- While on the tour, scouts will collect fabric samples made from four natural fibers (cotton, flax, silk, and wool), as well as two synthetic fabrics and one cellulosic fabric as they are relevant to displays and exhibits along the way. They will discover the processes of turning raw fibers into fabric.
- Scouts will participate in 6 hands-on stations to complete badge requirements, including making felt, fiber recognition using a microscope, fabric construction examination with magnifying glasses, and weaving, knitting, and extrusion activities. Scouts take home the felt "hackey sack" they make.
- Scouts are asked to define textile terminology.
- Discussions on how textiles are important to people during the course of the tour.
- Scouts will learn about jobs in the textile industry. They will focus on five major areas: science, engineering/machinery, design, advertising, and operatives (weaver, carder, etc.) .
- Scouts will identify ecological concerns regarding textile production and care.
- At the end of the tour scouts turn the question sheet in and Museum's merit badge counselors check it off and sign each scout's textile badge blue card.
